Watch the Game

With its proximity to the Nation’s Capital, Arlington takes on many of the professional sports teams of D.C. The Washington Commanders (formally the Washington Redskins) are the professional NFL team of the area. Many sports enthusiasts come to Arlington throughout the year to catch a game at the FedEx Field in North Englewood. For a small amount of time in the early 2000s, it was the nation’s largest capacity stadium.

For those who aren’t so much into the NFL, how about America’s favorite past-time? The Washington Nationals play at National Park right in D.C. Those who love baseball can check out a game a few times a week! However, let’s not forget about the Washington Capitals as well. This professional hockey team is one of the most fierce in the league.

 

If you’re not a fan of hockey, football, or baseball, perhaps you would rather enjoy some basketball. The Washington Wizards, formally known as the Washington Bullets, have seen their share of wins as well. Within the team’s first year, they had a 17-game winning streak. But we can’t be winners all the time. Season 09-10 they were ranked the 5th worst team on record. However, check out the Capital City Go-Go team which is the official minor league team.

Visit the Pentagon

Although it may not seem exciting, the Pentagon is an awesome attraction that Washington has to offer. You can take a guided tour that covers 1.5 miles of the building. The Pentagon is the world’s largest office building with about 6.5 million square feet. There are over 20,000 employees in this building alone.

 

The Pentagon is home to the United States Department of Defense and is located right in Arlington. This is a premier attraction for the area. Drawing in tons of people for work and visiting. This is something to be aware of when you’re browsing Arlington real estate. However, if you are browsing in this area, it’s probably due to employment since the government is the primary employer of this region.

The Pentagon was damaged during the September 11 attacks on our Nation. A plane was flown into the western side of the building. This resulted in significant damage and the loss of 184 lives. Fortunately, that part of the building was under renovation so many of those who would have been stationed in that location were not there due to the construction. There is a memorial on site that was created in memory of those who passed away.

Explore the Great Outdoors

Many local trails and parks offer a nice escape from the bustling city life. Theodore Roosevelt Island Park is located on an island in the Potomac River. There are tons of hiking and biking routes. Snap a photo of some of the natural wildflowers. And you should keep your eyes peeled for any wildlife. Many warblers and wading birds dwell on the island.

The Mount Vernon Trail is another trailhead that is 18 miles of paved walking. It parallels the Washington Memorial Parkway. There’s Gravelly Point Park to visit as well. It is a favorite for some to watch the planes take off from the Reagan National Airport. Finally, check out the Netherlands Carillon. Another outdoor experience, there are tons of trails and fields of tulips!

 

Even just a visit to the capital will have you traveling all over the area, including Arlington. With its proximity to the state capital, it is one of the most popular destinations for those in the D.C. area.
